Slapton Ley and Sands

Description:
This walk goes along the beach at Slapton Sands to Torcross and around the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve to reach the attractive village of Slapton before returning to the starting point.

Parking:
This walk starts from Slapton Sands Memorial Car Park (TQ7 2PN) (Grid Ref: SX828441). This is a pay and display car park.

Walk Route:
Leave the car park and head south along the beach for 1.9km to reach shore front houses at Torcross.  Stay with the promenade to pass the houses.  Turn right on reaching a lane and follow this for 30 metres to reach the A379 and turn right to follow the pavement to the Exercise Tiger Memorial Tank which commemorates the 639 American Soldiers and Sailors lost in the bay during a training exercise for the D-Day landings.

From the memorial join the South West Coastal Path and follow this heading north east walking besides Slapton Ley to reach Sands Road (Grid Ref: SX829444). Follow the pavement besides the road to cross Slapton Bridge and then take a footpath on the left to enter Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.

On reaching a junction of paths (Grid Ref: SX821443) continue straight on heading north east to reach a minor road and turn left towards Slapton.  Continue into the village to reach Sands Road Crossing turn right and follow Prospect Hill to pass the Queens Arms and then just after the Tower Inn and the village church turn left into Brook Street.

After 100 metres turn left to leave Brook Street and follow a lane to reach a minor road (Grid Ref: SX820449), cross the lane and take a footpath heading south out of the village to reach a junction of paths (Grid Ref: SX8204443).  Turn right and retrace the route through Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve and across Slapton Bridge to reach the starting point in the Slapton Sands Memorial Car Park.

Toilets:
There are public toilets in Slapton Sands Memorial Car Park and Torcross Car Park.
Toilets are available in the pubs and cafes on this route during opening hours.
